This is the series where I share with you some great bands that should be more famous. This post contains bands that start with the letter B (according to my iTunes anyway).
It seems there are a lot of good B bands since I could easily do another post just with Bs. I had a hard time narrowing down which ones to feature. I chose either my favorites or bands that are very unknown.
The Bakerton Group
The Bakerton Group is an instrumental side-project of Clutch (probably my favorite band). TBG contains all the members of Clutch, so of course, they sound a lot like Clutch, but they’re more jammy, psychedelic and experimental. In short, they’re awesome.
Origin: Germantown, Maryland
Genre: stoner rock, blues rock, instrumental
Years active: 1999–present
Baroness
I love Baroness. It’s difficult to pick one representative song by them since their sound is so varied, but I love the harmonizing on this acoustic track. It’s purty. They have four albums so far: Red, Blue and the 2-disc Yellow & Green. I’m not sure where they will go after that since they have the primary colors covered. Perhaps Purple.
Anyway, these guys are magical. You can put all four albums on random shuffle and not go wrong.
Origin: Savannah, Georgia
Genre: progressive rock, progressive metal, alternative metal
Years active: 2003–present
Big Business
Big Business started out as a two-piece band and has had a revolving cast of characters since, but the two founding members are still the driving force. Strangely, both original members played with the Melvins for a while at the same time.
They have such a huge sound.
Origin: Seattle, Washington
Genre: sludge, stoner rock
Years active: 2004–present
Black Bonzo
Black Bonzo’s music sounds very easily like lost recordings from the late 60s or early 70s, but it’s not. It’s recent and it’s pretty damn epic. I’m not the world’s biggest fan of progressive rock, but these guys are (or were) awesome.
Origin: Skellefteå, Sweden
Genre: progressive rock
Years Active: 2003–2011
Black Nasa
In the Letter A post, I mentioned Atomic Bitchwax. Well, this is the guitarist’s other band. They only produced two albums, but they’re well worth checking out.
Origin: Long Branch, New Jersey
Genre: rock, stoner rock, hard rock
Years Active: 2000-2005
Black Sleep of Kali
This song will rock your socks off. It’s one of those that, when it comes up in full shuffle, I turn the volume way up. ❤
BSOK signed with my favorite record label, Small Stone, so I expect very good things from them in the future.
Origin: Boulder, Colorado
Genre: stoner rock, stoner metal, hard rock
Years Active: 2008-present
Simple, fuzzy, catchy guitar riffs over a layer of horror rock, Bloody Hammers sounds just as contemporary as they do retro.
Origin: North Carolina
Genre: in their own words: Southern/Gothic/Fuzz
Years Active: 2012-Present
Boris
Boris is, by far, my favorite Japanese band. Half of their music is drone/doom and the other half is high-octane rock with catchy riffs. I love all of it, but I am especially partial to their rock stuff. I have not a clue what their lyrics are, but it doesn’t seem to matter. This song is from one of their 2011 releases (there are three of them–yes, three albums in one year), Heavy Rocks.
Origin: Tokyo, Japan
Genre: rock, experimental metal, drone doom, sludge metal, noise rock, stoner rock, psychedelic rock
Years Active: 1992-Present
The Brought Low
The Brought Low is one of my favorite bands and I’ve never seen them live since they rarely leave New York. They have three albums and all of them are amazing. This song is from their second album, Right On Time, which is my favorite. They’re from NYC, but they sound like they could be a southern rock/blues band.
Origin: New York, New York
Genre: blues, blues rock, southern rock, stoner rock
Years Active: 1999-Present
Bushfire
(This song goes out to my coworker)
Bushfire is a strange band in the sense that, while they are based in Germany, the members are from all over the world. Currently, Bushfire consists of one of each: Italian, Namibian, Swedish, Portuguese and US members, proving that music really is the best multicultural language. Internationally-rockin’ fuzzed-out heavy awesomeness.
Origin: Darmstadt, Germany
Genres: In their own words: heavy blues rock
Years Active: 2004–present
