30 Albums, 30 Stories: Peter & The Wolf

Prokofiev-Peter-and-the-Wol-535230Since I signed up for NaBloPoMo during a month when I have no time for posting, this November, I’ll be telling 30 stories about 30 albums.

The 30 albums on this list are not necessarily my favorite albums, but they are the ones that are instantly associated with a time and place. All of these albums represent a chapter of my life. This is the story of those albums, and by extension, the story of me, presented mostly chronologically.

Album 1: Peter & The Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev.

When I was a child, I had a child’s record player and this album. It was my rainy day album. It instilled in me, somewhat intentionally by my mother, a lifelong love of classical music.

I’m also a synesthete; I see music as colors, shapes, movement, and textures. The way Prokofiev associates the animals with musical instruments is something my developing brain could entirely understand.

This album reminds me of rainy afternoons playing with my sister in our makeshift card-table hideout. When I listen to it, sometimes, I can still capture that childlike sense of wonder that never entirely went away.

Favorite track:

The parts with the wolf, of course.
