Day 2 – A song that reminds you of your most recent ex.

My most recent ex was actually a long time ago since Male and I have had a very complicated non-relationship relationship thingy for many years now. My last boyfriend who wasn’t Male was awesome. He was smart, talented, adorable and probably one of the funniest people I’ve ever known.

Why did we break up then? Well, he broke up with me. I was in the throes of a very serious depressive spell, and bless his heart, when I finally started to come out of it, he dumped me. He waited for me to be less depressed first, which was very sweet, if a little misguided. We dated for about 11 months, out of which, at least 2 of them involved me crying for no reason.

I loved him in my fucked-up, half-assed, noncommittal way, but I wasn’t in love with him. We remained friends for a long time afterwards, but we naturally drifted apart and I haven’t talked to him in a few years. Breaking up with me actually broke his heart more than mine.

I harbor absolutely no ill feelings towards him. He deserves better than me. Well, I don’t mean better than me, since clearly, I am better than everyone, but he deserves to be with someone who loves him as much as he loved me and who isn’t broken all the time. I hope he found a nice normal girl to settle down with and that he’s happy.

Anyway, being dumped sucks, even if you’re not all that into the person dumping you. It’s kind of like being fired; you can’t help but feel inadequate. This was our breakup song:

I listened to the original a lot, but really, I preferred the Mike Ness cover since he changed the lyrics from “you could have done better” to “I could have done better,” and it’s just generally got more attitude.

In hindsight, it was a little mean to assign this song to him and it would have made more sense had I been the one to do the breaking, so I guess I did have a few hurty feelers at the time.
