Doot’n Doot’n Doot Do

I am a terrible, awful, off-key, no good singer. I know this because I was blessed with perfect pitch, which only serves to annoy the crap out of me when I hear myself singing. So, to counter that, I purposely sing off-key most of the time.

I also have a special relationship with music since I have music -> visual synesthesia. I talked about it here. I wake up with a song stuck in my head every single morning. This morning it was Black Sabbath.

So, when I see a daily prompt asking “what song is stuck in your head these days? Why does it speak to you?” I feel I have to answer, even if I am a day late.

A song that gets stuck in my head a lot is Minnie Ripperton’s Lovin’ You. I have absolutely no idea why. If I don’t have a song stuck in my head already, this will probably appear:

But these are really the only lyrics I know, so they just keep repeating:

Lovin’ you is easy cause your beautiful.

la-la-la-la-la.
la-la-la-la-la.
la-la-la-la-la-la-la.

doot’n doot’n doot do.
AAAH-AH-AH-AH-AH.

Yeah. It’s that annoying. I annoy myself and Male with that all the time. It’s really the “AAAH-AH-AH-AH-AH” that does it. I usually leave a pregnant pause between “doot’n doot’n doot do” and “AAAH-AH-AH-AH-AH” for added emphasis.

Another song that gets stuck in my head is Georgy Girl by the Seekers:

Again, I don’t know the words so this:

Hey there, Georgy girl
Swingin’ down the street so fancy-free

Becomes this:

Hey there, Georgy girl
Playin’ with your tools so so fancy-freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

And the rest of it, I just make up as I go along.

The Pièce de résistance of ridiculous songs that get stuck in my head for absolutely no reason has to be MacArthur Park by Richard Harris. Yes, that Richard Harris, the actor.

I am pretty sure that the reason this song gets stuck in my head is because the lyrics are absolutely ridiculous; even more ridiculous than “doot’n doot’n doot do.” This song is better known as the cake in the rain song:

MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
Cause it took so long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again, oh no

Richard is sad that he made a cake without a recipe and someone left it in the rain and now it’s melting. I’m sure there’s a metaphor in there somewhere for something entirely not drug-related, but I really don’t care to know what it is.

So, there you have it. Three songs that are older than I am that continually rattle around inside my brainpan for some inconceivable reason. Three songs I am forced to sing at high volume from time to time, rupturing my eardrums and those around me. Enjoy!
